Capture the right information

JIRA allows you to gather information unique to your organisation. You can configure JIRA's custom fields on a system-wide, project specific and/or issue type basis

Usage example: To assist your help desk staff with troubleshooting incoming issues, you can add a custom field called 'Operating System', which end users must complete whenever they log an issue of type 'Support Request'.

JIRA ships with over 20 types of custom fields - and you can also develop your own types of custom fields.

Usage example: Develop a drop-down list field which automatically populates with values pulled from your CRM system.

Extend and integrate JIRA

No product is ever going to fit perfectly into your organisation straight out of the box (although JIRA comes pretty close!).

JIRA's powerful plugin subsystem gives you the flexibility to customise and extend JIRA while ensuring compatibility with future versions. Create your own:

  • Reports and Portlets: add new ways to view and summarise data within JIRA, including data from external systems
  • Workflow elements: extend JIRA's workflow functionality
  • Listeners: trigger programmatic actions (e.g. SMS or Instant Message alerts) in response to system events
  • Services: schedule tasks to run periodically (e.g. automated backup, checking a POP email account for messages)

Or, perhaps somebody has already come up with and shared the solution in the active Atlassian Developer Network.

All commercial and academic licence holders also receive full access to the JIRA source code (under a developer source licence).

Revision control integration

JIRA integrates with a number of revision control systems, including:

  • CVS
  • Subversion
  • Perforce
  • Accurev

Remote interfaces

JIRA can be driven remotely via XML-RPC and SOAP interfaces.

Usage example: Have a Java program, Perl script or C++ client create and update JIRA issues.

Confluence integration

Take advantage of one of the world's most pragmatic knowledge management tools, Confluence, the enterprise wiki.

Collect your team's thoughts, plans and knowledge in Confluence, track your issues in JIRA, and let the two applications work together to help you get your job done.

Beyond JIRA

Squeeze more value out of JIRA by integrating it with other Atlassian products:

  • View your source and diffs
  • Link to code reviews and documentation
  • Know which issues relate to each build
