For more than 20 years, Atlassian has been on a mission to unleash the potential of every team – supporting organizations of all sizes, from every industry imaginable, and in countries spanning the globe.
We’re honored when our efforts are recognized. In December, Fortune named Atlassian the number-one company on its Future 50 list, a ranking of the top 50 organizations poised to adapt, thrive, and grow.
Fortune has produced the list since 2017 with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), tabulating the companies “built to exhibit resilience amid volatility – and deliver better-than-average growth in the long term.” High praise!
So in a time when there’s no shortage of culture-shifting, forward-thinking companies, how did we stand out from the crowd?
Because of our obsession with pushing teamwork forward – for over 300,000 customers, and for over 12,000 employees who wake up every day to support them.
Innovation from the inside out
Atlassian has been focused on adapting, thriving, and growing since day one, and this mindset has inspired us to take some bold approaches to teamwork.
In 2020, Atlassian embraced distributed work for our employees – for good. Our Team Anywhere policy empowers our people to choose where they deliver their best work and gives us the flexibility to hire exceptional hire exceptional talent beyond the physical footprints of our offices.
Team Anywhere allows us to study the challenges and opportunities of distributed work, providing insights into how modern organizations can thrive. Every company operating at scale is now distributed. With teams spread across time zones and locations (or even just sitting on a different floor), work is rarely done shoulder-to-shoulder. Learning how to connect our own employees helps us design data-driven solutions that help our customers work effectively, no matter where their teams are.
Working async with Loom
As a global company with teams in 14 countries, Atlassians need to communicate, collaborate, and find information asynchronously (that is, without needing to be in the same place at the same time). For that, Loom video messaging is essential. We create 14,000 Looms each month (!!) to share updates and information -with anywhere from one to thousands of people – and use Loom AI to share meeting recordings so everyone’s in the loop.
A deliberate System of Work
These customers are our lifeblood. We obsess about what makes great teams tick because our customers tell us that teamwork is not getting easier.
According to Atlassian’s State of Teams report, Fortune 500 companies lose 25,000,000,000 (yes, billion!) work hours per year due to ineffective collaboration. As the number of tools, data sources, and teams increase, companies struggle to stay aligned and productive.
In that spirit of adapting, thriving, and growing, Atlassian has developed its own System of Work: a deliberate approach to teamwork for technology-driven companies. At its core, it emphasizes how we need to connect every team – business teams and tech teams – to maximize impact and collaboration. We have built a platform and portfolio that helps our customers implement our system of work, helping millions of teams of all sizes and industries align their work to the right goals, plan work seamlessly, and break down knowledge silos to get ahead.
Shipping innovation at speed
Our R&D engine means we build and ship fast across our Atlassian Cloud platform. In AI, we aren’t just marketing ideas; we’re delivering real features and benefits to improve teamwork. We shipped Rovo – our first standalone AI product, and one of our most ambitious – in just five months. Customers are already calling Rovo a “game-changer” as they welcome Rovo Agents to their teams to tackle specialized tasks.
We’re grateful to be recognized by Fortune for our future-focused innovation, but we’re only getting started. 🚀 We’re fueled up for what’s ahead and look forward to continuing to help our employees and customers improve teamwork, together.
