‘Work,’ your way: Jira’s language is evolving to better represent all teams

At Atlassian, our mission is to help unleash the potential of every team. As more teams make Jira their home for work, we’re updating the language in our tools to better reflect the diverse ways you define and manage your work.

For years, we’ve referred to the work that teams track in Jira as ‘issues.’ However, you’ve shared with us that this term can be limiting and somewhat confusing in the context of your work.

We believe that the true power of Jira lies in its flexibility to represent any kind of work. From planning a strategic product launch to tracking your team’s daily tasks, Jira provides the versatility to manage it all.

So, going forward, instead of referring to your work as ‘issues,’ Jira will call the different items you track exactly what they are: ‘work.’

Define your work, your way

Just as today, you can still customize as many work types as you need to accommodate your team’s language, workflows, fields, and automation preferences.

We’re extending that flexibility by making Jira smarter — when you’re working on a specific type of work, the interface will now update to reflect that context. For example, engineering teams see ‘bugs’ or ‘stories,’ whereas Marketing teams may see ‘launches’ or ‘copy.’

This change is more than just a shift in words; it’s about adopting the language that best defines your work, whether it’s a ‘launch,’ a ‘task,’ or even an ‘issue’ – the choice is yours!

In areas of Jira that are not linked to your specific workflows, such as navigation menus and help articles, ‘issues’ will simply be referred to as ‘work items.’

And, if you still love ‘issues,’ don’t worry! You can configure ‘issues’ to be just another type of work in Jira.

A fresh approach to ‘work’ in Jira

Whether you’re a tech-savvy developer or a creative campaign manager, we’re excited for you to explore these new terminology changes, designed to make Jira more reflective of your team’s unique workflow.

Keep an eye out for upcoming updates as we roll this out over the coming months, and please continue sharing your feedback and experiences with us as we refine Jira’s language to better align with the needs of all teams.

Here’s to a future where your work is defined by you!
