What are you announcing today?

Atlassian is entering into a strategic partnership with Slack. As part of that partnership, Slack will be purchasing the IP for Stride and Hipchat Cloud, and Atlassian will make an equity investment in Slack.

As a result, we will no longer be offering any team communications products to our customers. That means we will discontinue Hipchat Cloud, Hipchat Data Center, Hipchat Server, and Stride.

Teams will not be able to sign up for Stride starting on July 26th, 2018. Existing groups will be able to continue to add users and use Stride and Hipchat Cloud products until February 15th, 2019. Existing Hipchat Data Center & Hipchat Server customers will have support through the end of their license period.

Building on the success of existing integrations between Atlassian's products and Slack, we will co-develop tighter native integrations between our products.

What led you to make this decision and why now?

We knew we were taking a risk with Stride, but we had a vision for how teams needed to communicate that we felt passionately we had to deliver.

While we were working on Stride, the market shifted. After nearly a year of operating Stride, it is clear that the best move forward is to partner with the market leader.

This move will allow us to focus time and energy on our core products and new opportunities.

What informed this decision?

As we looked at our projections for each of our products and markets, it was clear that Slack has continued to extend its lead in the communications space.

While we’re proud of what we created with Stride, we believe the energy to expand and continue it is better invested in deepening the relationship with Slack, and creating more value for our joint customers.

When do the changes go into effect and how long will the products be available? Can you share key milestones?

Teams will not be able to sign up for Stride starting on July 26th, 2018. Existing groups will be able to continue to add users and use Stride and Hipchat Cloud products until February 15th, 2019. Note: We are strongly encouraging customers who want to retain their Stride and Hipchat data to begin exporting their data in January 2019, as well as exporting any associated app data. The last day to export data from Stride and Hipchat Cloud is March 15, 2019.

Existing Hipchat Data Center & Hipchat Server customers will have support through the end of their license period.

How will you support the products moving forward?

We will have a small, dedicated team supporting our customers on both Stride and Hipchat through the transition.

What happens to existing Stride & Hipchat customers?

Existing groups will be able to continue to add users and use Stride and Hipchat Cloud products until February 15th, 2019. Note: We are strongly encouraging customers who want to retain their Stride and Hipchat data to begin exporting their data in January 2019, as well as exporting any associated app data. The last day to export data from Stride and Hipchat Cloud is March 15, 2019.

Existing Hipchat Data Center & Hipchat Server customers will have support through the end of their license period. We will provide a preferred migration path to Slack to all customers to ensure a smooth and simple transition.

How will it impact other products?

This move will allow Atlassian to focus time and energy on our core products, such as Jira Software, Trello, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Jira Service Desk, as well as to go after new opportunities.

Our partnership with Slack will include co-built native integrations of Slack within Atlassian's product family, creating a seamless teamwork experience.

Are there other products that you will end of life?

There are currently no plans to discontinue any of our other products.

Will Atlassian be starting development on a new chat product?

No, we will be partnering with Slack and working with other vendors in the space as part of our future chat strategy.

Did you consider partnering with other companies, like MSFT, CRM or FB?

Atlassian's and Slack's products already had many integrations and connections between them prior to this partnership, so there was a good foundation from which to build.
