Our investment process

The FAQs below speak to the application process and investment terms

Overview

Why has Atlassian decided to start making investments in the developer ecosystem?

The Atlassian ecosystem is as important as ever, especially as we focus more and more on our cloud-based solution.

We’re committed to doing our part to ensure a vibrant ecosystem, which now this includes putting our money where our mouth is with investments from Atlassian Ventures.

What types of companies will Atlassian invest in?

Atlassian will invest in two types of companies that are critical to our ongoing success:

  • Early-stage (typically pre-seed and seed stage) startups building Marketplace apps for our cloud products. We invest in both existing ecosystem developers and new teams in this category, and are excited to give these companies an opportunity to grow.
  • Larger, more established product partners scaling their businesses and integrating with Atlassian products, often via APIs. These investments are often made in partnership with institutional investors, and generally target series A onwards.

Application process

Who can apply?

The application linked on this website (above and below) is generally designed for early-stage startups that have already launched, or are planning on launching, at least one app in the Atlassian Marketplace.

If you are a later stage company (Series A and beyond) looking for investment, please email us directly at ventures@atlassian.com.

What is the application process like? How long will it take to get a response? Can I apply more than once?

You can find the application form here.

We accept and review applications on rolling basis. You can expect to hear from us within four weeks of applying. If your application is taken forward, we will be in contact to organize a call with the Atlassian Ventures team.

Please submit one application form per company. Descriptions of multiple apps / ideas can be included within a single application.

If you previously applied for funding you are welcome to apply again. Just because an idea or app wasn’t right for us the first time doesn’t mean that will always be the case. We’d love to hear about the progress you’ve made. You are encouraged to submit another application after you have new information that could help validate an investment.

My company has other core activities as well as Atlassian Ventures app development, can Atlassian still invest in us?

Definitely. That said, in order to receive funding, you will need to have a business plan focused specifically on building a Marketplace app (or apps) for Atlassian’s cloud products. These are typically monetized through the Atlassian Marketplace.

Do my app(s) need to be already released on the Atlassian Marketplace, or can I submit an idea that is in development?

Either or both! You can submit applications for apps that are listed as well as apps that have not yet been developed. We’ll want to understand from your application how you plan to grow adoption of your app if it’s not already developed.

Will my application be assessed differently based on which country I am located in?

Not at all. Atlassian Ventures is a global program and we believe in unleashing the potential of teams all over the world. If your application is chosen, our legal team will work with you to structure the investment within the constraints of your country’s legal requirements.

I believe Atlassian has already invested in an app that competes with mine. Should I still submit an application?

From time to time we may invest in competing ideas. We understand that there may be perceived conflicts, and we’ll work with you to address any concerns you might have.

Investment terms

What are Atlassian's investment terms for early-stage companies?

We have created standard investment documents, with target-friendly terms that we will not negotiate. This helps ensure that you can do what you do best – build great products – and we can make this process as scalable as possible (i.e., invest in lots of great companies!).

Our standard terms are a $250K USD convertible note with a $5M USD cap and a 20% discount.

Other rights that we will require as part of our investment:

  • Information rights – we request that companies send us send financial statements on a quarterly basis. This helps us track your progress over time.
  • Pro rata rights - these give us the right to participate in subsequent rounds of funding in order to maintain our ownership percentage.
  • In a nod to Atlassian’s Open Company, No BS value, we’ve published a blog about our Convertible Note, as well as the Note itself. See the blog and our Note for more information.
  • Right of notice - if you get an acquisition offer from a third party, we want to know about it! This does not give us any rights for negotiation, etc. It’s just a heads up about the process a few days in advance.
Will Atlassian be taking a board seat?

No, we will not take either a Board seat or a Board Observer seat.

My company has already raised funds, can I still apply?

Yes. Please provide details in the application form.

Do you have standard terms for the later-stage, priced round investments?

Yes, we have standard terms for our investments in later-stage companies (Series A and beyond). In May 2022, we published this blog as well as our standard Side Letter.

These larger investments are typically made in partnership with a lead institutional investor and take into account the needs and growth plans of each company.

Investment support

What non-monetary support can I expect to receive from Atlassian Ventures as a part of the investment?

Companies in the Atlassian Ventures portfolio can take advantage of ever-evolving “services” designed to help founders grow their businesses in the Atlassian ecosystem. For example: Fireside Chats about relevant topics such as PLG, pricing and packaging, building healthy teams, etc.; accelerator perks from key partners such as Amazon Web Services and HubSpot; co-marketing and amplification vehicles; warm-introductions to key Atlassian subject matter experts (SMEs); preferred placement on Atlassian’s digital properties, including, but not limited to, the Atlassian Marketplace.

Our portfolio companies also have ongoing and regular access to the Atlassian Ventures team, who can help with any roadblocks you’re facing, or serve as a thought partner or sounding board.

When possible, we also provide showcase opportunities at virtual and face-to-face events such as Team, Atlassian’s annual customer conference.

What is not included in the portfolio management program?

The following are not included in the Atlassian Ventures portfolio management program:

  • Commercial partnerships
  • Any promise of future investment
  • Additional support beyond what is outlined above
